Varaha Mihira
VARAHA MIHIRA: Astronomo, astrologo, matematico e geografo indiano del sec. VI d.C. Nativo di Avanti (moderna Ujjain) e figlio di Adityadasa, morì nel 587. Secondo la tradizione conservataci in una strofa del Jyotirvidabhana, egli è ricordato come una delle “nove gemme” che erano ornamento della corte del re Vikramaditya.
La sua opera più importante è la BRIHAT SAMHITA “Il grande compendio”, la quale, con il suo carattere enciclopedico, illumina molteplici aspetti della cultura e della civiltà indiana e offre allo studioso un ricco materiale di indagine e di raffronto con altri testi appartenenti a branche speciali dello scibile. Oltre all’astrologia, cui l’opera vuole essere dedicata, si trovano in essa pagine di astronomia, geografia, meteorologia, ritualistica, scienza divinatoria, scienza delle costruzioni, scienza sulle pietre preziose, metrica, ecc. La forma del dettato, in metro vario, offre in alcuni brani autentici pregi di elevata poesia. Tra le opere minori sono da segnalarsi la Panca Siddhantika (L’opera) riguardante i cinque siddhanta”, che ha carattere genuinamente astronomico, trattando dei cinque antichi sistemi astronomici (siddhanta) indiani e tramandando di essi notizie che non si conoscono per altra via.
