Division of the planetary sources ||4||
1The Sun is the soul, the Moon is consciousness, and Mars is courage. Then, Mercury is speech, Jupiter is
knowledge and the pleasant, Venus is intoxication, and Saturn is the unpleasant of the man of Time.
2With planets (Sun, etc.) with strength, the soul, etc. are possessed of more strength, [respectively]. But with those [Sun, etc.] deficient in strength, those [soul, etc.] are deficient in strength, [respectively]. The result is reversed of Saturn.
3Which according to the rising of the abundant distinctions of the houses from the zodiac signs from the lagna, just so are those enumerated with seven, nine, and eight. With that order are those portions of Time produced.
4The risen divided from the lagna is situated in the left body portion if the weakness acquires abundance in the left, etc. of that and that not ascended is with strength.
5Bearing the head, eyes, ears, nostrils, two cheeks, jaw, mouth, neck, shoulder, arm, sides of the torso, heart, chest, and navel in the same order. Bladder, male genitalia and anus, a pair of testicles, pair of thighs, two knees, two shins, and a pair of feet. Those are arranged at the two sides from the house of the lagna.
6Among these, malefics cause a wound and benefics cause a mark. Likewise among those situated among one’s own portion or one’s own zodiac sign cause a mark or wound produced from birth. Among these planets situated contrary to that cause [a wound or mark later on in life].
7The Sun and Moon are the rulers, but Mercury is the heir-apparent. Mars is the lord of the army. Venus and Jupiter are the two ministers and Saturn is the servant of the two. Those with strength cause, indeed, the innate nature of men at the time of birth.
8The Sun, Venus, Mars, Rahu, Saturn, the Moon, Mercury, and Jupiter are the supreme lords of the eastern, etc. directions.
9Jupiter, Mercury, and Venus are declared benefics, but Saturn, Mars, and the Sun are declared malefics.
Mercury conjunct with a malefic and the waning Moon are malefic.
10Heli and Bhānu [are names of the Sun]. Śaśin and Candra [are names of the Moon]. Krūrākṣa, Kṣitinandana, Āra, Rakta, and Vakra [are names of Mars]. Hemna, Vid, Jña, and Bodhana [are names of Mercury].
11Īḍya and Ijya, Aṅgirās, and Jīva [are the names of Jupiter]. Āsphujit, Sita, and Bhṛ gu [are the names of Venus]. Manda, Koṇa, Yama, and Kṛṣṇa [are the names of Saturn]. One should know the others as is customary in the world.
12[The colors] of the Sun, etc. are coppery-red, white, reddish-brown, greenish, yellow, variegated, and black. The lords of the Sun, etc. are Pāvaka, Jala, Guha, Keśava, Śakra, Śacī, and Vedhas.
13Having worshipped that direction with those divine mantras of the planets of the Sun, etc., the departed quickly obtains the praised of gold, elephants, beasts of burden, etc.
14Moon and Venus are of women. The two hermaphrodite lords are Mercury and Saturn. Jupiter, the Sun, and Mars are of men. Jupiter and Venus are of the wise. The Sun and Mars are of the rulers. The Moon is of the merchants. Saturn is of the mixed. Mercury is of the servants. Those beginning with Mars are declared of fire, earth, ether, water, and wind.
15[The Sun, etc. are] of the distinct tastes of acrid, saline, bitter, mixed, sweet, sour, and astringent, and of the divine, water, fire, sport, wealth, rest, and a garbage heap.
16[The Sun, etc.] of course, new, burnt, wet, neither new or old, durable, and worn out garments or also of copper, gem, gold, mixed, silver, pearl, and iron.
17The Sun, etc. are the lords of an ayana, kṣaṇa (48 minutes), day, season, month, fortnight, and a year. Saturn, Venus, Mars, the Moon, Mercury, and Jupiter are the lords of the Śiśira, etc.
18Defeating of the enemy is to be declared identical to the time calculated from the portion risen from the lagna of the lord of the lagna among the conceptions and in combination with what is to be done.
19The lord of the Ṛ g Veda is Jupiter. The lord of the Yajur Veda is Venus. The lord of the Sāma Veda is Mars. The lord of the Atharva Veda is Mercury.
20Jupiter, the Moon and Venus, the Sun and Mars, and Mercury and Saturn are the lords of the divine, mortals, ancestors, and of the abodes of the planes of hell, [respectively].
21The Sun has insignificant, curly hair, clever intellect, prominent and unique form of speech, not very tall, beautiful honey-yellow eyes, is brave, strong, firm, has dark colored red skin, concealed feet, is the marrow of pitta, a great lotus, four-cornered, maker of the stout, and having safflower (red) clothes.
22The Moon is gentle, has agreeable eyes, sweet speech, is white, has a thin body, young, tall, fine, curly, black hair, wise, soft, sātvika (true), beloved, having the nature Vāta/Kapha, a dear friend, the best of the best of the charming, merciful, beloved among old women, fickle, very fortunate, and wears white cloth.
23Mars is short, reddish-brown, solid body, brilliance of glowing agni, fickle, possessed of marrow, reddish-brown cloth, very clever and brave, accomplished in speech, short, straight hair and radiant youth, composed of pitta, related to tamas, fierce, bold, skillful in destruction, and brilliant with red.
24Mercury has wide eyes with red corners, sweet speech, dark color of dūrvā grass, strong skin, very predominate in rajas, abundant clear speech, having the character of the three doṣ as, pleased, middling beauty, excellent wit, embodied with veins, thereupon of all one mimics with words and dress, and has pālāśa (green) clothes.
25Jupiter should have somewhat reddish-brown eyes, knowing Vedic knowledge, roar sounding like a lion, firm, abounding in sattva, perfectly pure golden body, brawny, uplifted chest region of the body, short, delighted in dharma, skilled in decorum, firm, large eyes, forgiving, wearing yellow garments, body composed of kapha, fat, and most excellent.
26Venus is agreeable, long-armed, large and wide face, spotless forehead, beautiful, black, straight, fine, hanging down hair, dark portions of dūrvā, desirous, composed of vāta and kapha, very fortunate, variegated clothes, related to rajas, charming, intelligent, large eyes, and a large shoulder region.
27Saturn has reddish-brown and depressed eyes, a long, lean body with prominent veins, has an inactive long body having the nature of wind, very malicious, long with sinew, unmerciful, foolish, large nails and teeth, very dirty, harsh, foul, consisting of tamas, fierce, exceeding with anger, formed with old age, and black cloth.
28Friends from the Sun are Jupiter, Mars, and the Moon; the Sun and Mercury; the Sun, the Moon, and Jupiter; the Sun and Venus; the Moon, the Sun, and Mars; Saturn and Mercury, and Venus and Mercury, by that order.
29From the Sun Venus and Saturn are enemies, fromthe Moon none whatsoever, Mercury, the Moon, Venus and Mercury, the Sun and the Moon, and the Moon, the Sun, and Mars. The remainder of friends and enemies are neither friend nor foe.
30Those situated in the twelfth, fourth, second, tenth, eleventh, or third houses are friends. Those situated in the sixth, seventh, first, or ninth houses are time-based enemies of those.
31At the time of birth those planetary lords named friends, neutrals, and enemies with those time-based friends of those are also to be considered best friends, friends, and neutrals. And those planetary lords named
enemies, neutral, and friends with those enemies are to be considered great enemies, enemies, and neutrals.
32From their position, planets always aspect all those from an increase by a quarter of the third and tenth, fifth and ninth, fourth and eighth, and seventh houses, Indeed, by that order is the result. [Verse clarification: From their position, planets will aspect the third and tenth house by a quarter, the fourth and eighth house by a half, the fifth and ninth house by three quarters, and the seventh house by a four quarters (a full result).] 33Saturn, Jupiter, Mars; and Venus, the Sun, the Moon, and Mercury fully aspects the third and tenth, the fifth and ninth, the fourth and eighth, and the seventh houses, in that order.
34I will declare the four kinds of strength related to direction, position, time, and motion in the complete determination of the disposition (of a planet). A planet devoid (of those strengths) should be weak.
35Jupiter and Mercury in the lagna, the Sun and Mars in the 10th house, Saturn in the 7th house, the Moon and Venus in the 4th house house are the accomplished in the directions. This in one’s own exaltation, one’s own mūlatrikoṇa, one’s own zodiac sign, and situated in a friendly zodiac sign or one’s own portion aspected with the benefic results is a more powerful planet. The Moon and Venus in a feminine zodiac sign and those remaining in a masculine zodiac sign are born in a position of strength.
36Jupiter, the Sun, and Venus are strong in the day. Mercury is always strong. Saturn, the Moon, and Mars are strong in the night. The lords of the horā, month, day, and year are strong. Benefics are strong in the bright half of the Moon. The others are strong in the dark half of the Moon. Those planets conquering in battle, retrograde, and not combust are strong. Further, the Sun and Moon are possessed of strength with the northern course in motional strength spoken by Satya.
37Venus, Mars, the Sun, the Moon, and Jupiter present in the northern ayana are strong. The Moon and Saturn present in the southern ayana are strong. Also, Mercury situated in one’s own varga is strong in both.
38Among the zodiac signs, those [planets] termed feminine, masculine, and hermaphrodite situated in the first, last, and middle [are strong]. Always [those planets are strong] recently risen having departed from the Sun, as believed by the lords of the Yavana.
39The Moon is very strong in the beginning of the night portion, Venus in the middle of the night, Mars at the end of the night, Mercury at the beginning of the day, the Sun in the middle of the day, Jupiter at all times, and Saturn at the end of the day.
40Saturn, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, the Moon, and the Sun are stronger following in succession. When equal in strength, the wise should consider that common strength.
